Character introduction
Welcome to the second segment of the Character Introduction blog posts. As I hinted last week, this post will not be about Rebecca Jordan so stay tuned for that. ❤ Remember, this segment will give you insight into my upcoming novel Just One characters, as well as some other creations.
Even my Just One characters have multiple Word documents for each of the planned books, and even multiple versions as the story grew and characters developed further.
Connor Flores, or Kon Xelocs, age unknown. He’s a businessman who wears three-piece-suits and drinks expensive scotch. He’s got a lot of secrets in his past, and hopefully his niece never finds out about them, but instead of guilt, Connor has excuses. Hey, if someone else is the villain in his story, clearly he’s not.
Eveleen’s uncle and Valerie’s legal guardian stands out in the crowd and doesn’t like humans… hint hint… he’s not one of them.
Let me be honest about this, the physical inspiration for Connor is Harvey Specter from Suits, played by Gabriel Macht. Lighter hair that’s always styled, pitch black irises (always watch for the eye color in Just One). He always wears a three-piece-suit and doesn’t shy away from reminding his brother-in-law (or anyone else for that matter) that he comes from money.
As a writer, I spend an awful lot of time developing characters before their story even begins. It something I started doing as a roleplay, where before you could start writing with everyone, you had to put up a biography for the characters (which was sometimes approved, and other times just posted and would only be addressed if there were major issues). It taught me to create (basically) CVs for my fictional characters, which I would even update over time. I still do this for my story characters too.
Connor is definitely one of the characters that grew with the story, the first book of the Just One series will gradually reveal that there is something dark hiding in his past (to us), and over the course of the other books, the intent is to show just what this is all about. What is his big dark secret? And why has he been afraid of his niece’s wraith for the past forty years? Those are all question to be answered in the sequels, and somewhat in the first book.
The thing is, the more I wrote Connor and his inner thoughts, I became far more intrigued with this big dark secret. Originally, this was “the big dark secret.” Connor had done something and Eveleen couldn’t find out. Sometimes, my brain works like that. As I wrote, I understood better what it was, and figuring out how it came to be became my new priority. This birthed to idea of “Just One: Conspiracy” (working title). This will be one of the books down the line, which will show just what it’s all about, showing new characters that will only be mentioned in the first book one the sequels.
