Character Introduction
Welcome to the third segment of Character Introduction blog posts. This week, we’ve finally arrived to central character (or one of) in my story. In her original incarnation (when Just one was a fan fiction), she was the reason why I started writing this story.
When I started out so long ago, the main character of my fan fiction with Elizabeth Parker, the leading lady of the 1999 TV show Roswell.
It was her story I was curious about, why all my questions began.
For me, there had to be more for Liz so when the show didn’t provide the more I was looking for, I gave it myself. I wrote the story of who Liz should have been in her past life. And in the process I fell in love with who she was in her past life – Kivana Eli Xothorn.

Eveleen Collins is a seventeen year old girl now with brown hair and pitch black eyes. She’s average height, and always wearing a lot of layers of clothes (even in the summer time) because the girl has always been cold. This may seem a quirky decision to a lot of characters who got used to her odd fashion sense, but there is a very big reason why Ellie dresses the way she dresses. So, of course, when she finally sheds all those layers because she gets back the one gift she needs, it’s going to confuse a lot of people.
She thinks herself a logical person who’s always focused on school… because that is how she intends to get out of Colletown, a small town that has never suited her. The answer that reasoning will lie in what the dreams tell her. That she’s meant bigger worlds, and on some level, Ellie has felt it. This logical side of her will get tested as she embarks on her journey and starts understanding things about her that shouldn’t make as much as they do. Like does she really believe in reincarnation? Does she believe aliens? Has she ever considered the possibility that her parents are not her parents?
In terms of her appearance, since watching Wednesday on Netflix (an Addams Family die hard fan here<3), I feel Jenna Ortega is an amazing representation of how Eveleen looks. Have you seen her eyes? Perfect. In terms of height, Ellie would be taller than she is (as she would be the same height as Kivana Eli) so I picture at about 5′ 5” (1.7 m).
As the Monday book quotes section on Instagram have hinted, Ellie has been dreaming she’s someone else for a long time now and these nightly visions become clearer as the story progresses. The girl in her dreams (Valerie) looks and mostly dresses the same as Ellie does, but the more she knows her, the more she’s sure she doesn’t like her very much. Valerie seems self-observed, rude to her uncle and has no regard for money. All the things Eveleen is not. In the dreams, however, she has no choice but to tag along.
One night though, she and Valerie start dreaming of the same past life together. Things do get interesting then, because the more the see, the more it seems real. Which life is the right one then? The one they live now or the one in the dreams? They’ll have to figure that one out, and they’ll have to do it together despite their differences.
The first book of Just One is primarily written from Eveleen’s point of view, because she’ll be learning all about the ‘verse of Just One along with the readers. Her learning makes Just One a journey of discovery, understanding the past and making new decision on the basis of bad decisions made before. Ellie has a lot to uncover, as does Valerie alongside her; with a good few bumps along the way.
Of course, there’s also a love story mixed into that, because soulmates.
Cameron Dimitrov is a boy who goes to school with her and while Ellie has never really seen Cam, he’s always had a sense like he’s always known her. This changes when the girl starts seeing different dreams, especially when Valerie is visited by a mysterious man with the same eyes Cameron. This man feels familiar to Eveleen and while originally, she can’t remember where she’s seen those same eyes (despite knowing Cameron for years) a day time vision will unlock the the answer to that question as she comes face to face with the boy. Cameron and Eveleen are my Just One goals. They’re meant to be the happily ever after of the series, which of course means I haven’t made it easy for them. Like a typical grew up in the 90s romance fan wild child, I believe the epic love stories doesn’t just go love at first sight to happily ever after (because that’s kind of boring), so there will be plenty of obstacles coming their way.
Just One is a story that will throw you in the middle of the ‘verse. It’s not beginning, and it’s not the end. It’s meant to bring you into the story and show hints of what it’s all about. As the story furthers in the sequels, Kivana Eli will have her time, and we’ll go deeper into those reincarnations and the study of soulmates. It does from my own questions of these topics, and while I have inserted them in a fan fiction meant to be about teenage alien hybrids and their connection to humans, discovery of true love and who they’re meant to be, where the word destiny plays a massive role, as in the say what they thought was destiny may not be, but is in fact design they broke from.
I’m saying something else. Destiny or fate is not design. It’s what’s meant to be and will find away somehow. It’s not forced, it’s rediscovering what once was and finding each other against all odds. That is Ellie’s and Cam’s life story. That is what Kivana Eli and Zannder (Cam’s past life) discover without learning the history of their love story.
That’s all for today’s segment of Character Introduction brought to you by this writer’s love for her creations. Next week, the time will finally come for Rebecca Jordan. I’ve teased about her plenty by now, and I can’t wait for you to meet her.
How long do you think before Cameron and Eveleen get their happy ending? Did you watch Roswell growing up – and if you did, did it make you wonder about Liz Parker as it did me? I’d love to hear from you on this subject. I’ll be giving Roswell extra love in this weeks Inspiration Thursday segment so stay tuned for that.
