Katrine Van-Derveld

Character Introduction

A Witch, a Wolf, a Time Traveller, a noble lady – she’s a girl who breaks all the rules…

The seventh instalment of the Character introduction is about the Star Wars Extended Universe Roleplay (RP) character (see blog post about star wars roleplaying), a fictional daughter of two previously established characters and a member of two large RP families. I’ve been looking forward to introducing you to Kat, as she is the inspiration behind The Wolf’s Heir: Katrine’s Awakening (see blog post), another approach to a long-time established and developed character.

How it Started…

When I started writing Katrine, I was already writing her mother, Curupira (Ruu) Hawk, who had been created as the younger sister of another character I loved to write with. Ruu started as a teenager, and so did Katrine. It’s a good time for me to start developing them, as they’re no longer quite children, but it gives me an excellent chance to apply growth, build their personality and allow for proper development through writing (with others, in terms of RP).

Like Mother and Father, like Daughter

Initially, there were a few times known about Katrine. She was a seventeen-year-old girl with purple hair (an early inspiration for writing Kat was Dove Cameron in her role of Mal in Disney’s Descendants) who went through a black hole in search of her older sister Chloe (a little crossover with the Star Trek universe there). She wasn’t quite right in the head, and her fictional father was regarded as bat sh*t insane (and her mother mad as a hatter), so she absolutely had to be quirky and think odd things like – true love starts with mass murder because that’s how her parents’ love story began. She met a few interesting characters along her early journey as I learned more about her (as a pantser often does).

Somewhere along the way, I figured out the purple hair was part of a curse from an ancestor who had been haunting her since she was a child (why should anything be easy when it can be complicated?).

Choosing Dove Cameron

Her play-by actually changed from Amy Adams (as her mother’s original was Isla Fisher), but at the time, I wasn’t really sure what I wished to do with Katrine, and as much as I loved the combination of faces, something was missing that I couldn’t quite place. It took several years of having Kat as someone I wrote more on an occasional basis to discovering Disney’s Descendants and revamping her physical appearance (as well as adding the course) to making Katrine my main RP character who took centre stage above many others I have developed for the remainder of my roleplay years.

Character Development

In that time, she’s grown from apprentice (novice level force/spells user) to a master, stood as Night Mother to a budding witch coven, been recognized as their to her family estate (which is the storyline of The Wolf’s Heir: Katrine’s Awakening), adopted a young girl as her little sister, fell in love and got her heart broken, became a mother (another aspect of The Wolf’s Heir), became hunted by her former faction, realized the love of her life was the very boy who rescued her from the curse (Aston is a fictional character written by another written, and aspects of their love story are very much part of The Wolf’s Heir)…

As a roleplayer, I’ve developed a lot of characters, and many of them have gone through extensive journeys of their own. Still, there was something about Katrine that had me hooked in ways no one else managed to capture me (Curupira and another character, Lenavina, indeed, weren’t far behind, with a few mothers taking second and third places as much as I love them to this day), but it was Kat. Especially once she was paired with the right face. Katrine’s face hasn’t changed since discovering Dove Cameron (with purple hair and late as a blonde and brunette). It was the perfect fit that inspired plenty of graphics and furthered my muse to keep writing.

Possibility for Sequels?

I’ve touched upon this a few times over the previous posts, but I’ve longed to extract Katrine’s story from the Star Wars universe and make it into an account of its own. The short story competition (see blog post) allowed me to do just that, as Just One is definitely something I want to publish into a book series and didn’t want to enter her (or shorten after having expended it). With Kat’s rich history, I believe the short story could have its sequel(s), and even the stories of Larentia or the family’s future.

Sometimes, I wish to go back and develop her further, but my focus has shifted to writing my books now, my course and even this blog. Adding something else, especially roleplay that engulfs you (when you have the right writing partners), would take too much of my time, which is well organized now. But as the famous title says… never say never again.

And there she is, one of my pride and joys. I’ve hinted at who Katrine is these last few months and have finally taken the time to write her down. What do you think of Kat? Would you read a story about Kat’s journey? Would you read multiple stories about Kat? Who’s your favourite fictional character? If you roleplay, who’s your own favourite character? Tell me about them.

This has been another Character Introduction segment, brought to you by this writer’s love for her creations. Next week, I’ll give you some insight into Cameron Dimitrov, but in the upcoming weeks, I’ll introduce you to Just One and other characters I’ve worked on over the years. Week after, as it is Halloween, I’ll also introduce you to one of my Just One villains.
