Short Story: The Wolf’s Heir

Katrine’s Awakening

Katrine was running. She didn’t know for how long. Her daughter stirred in the seat beside her, making the woman turn. Larentia was innocent in this story, a prize possession for a father who demanded an heir.

At the age of twenty-seven, Katrine was of small build. She had luscious, long brown hair and blue eyes. They said they glowed when she cast magic, but this trait belonged to her siblings, Chloe and Kedric, when they changed. It’s the same as their dad. Katrine didn’t change, nor had she ever. Her eyes could, therefore, not glow.

Her older sister, Chloe, disappeared a decade ago.

She went after her when she was only seventeen.

Their destination was Uropia VII, the only habitable moon in the system. Kat couldn’t stop thinking about whether she had made a mistake in coming here—after all, this was precisely what Idris obsessed about the whole time they were together. He had told her about the moon and where their species had come from. They were once overlords, and he intended to rule over it again.

Idris was convinced it was his destiny, but Ket knew where the planet was and the truth. He had a claim, not Idris Bechtel. And it was Kat and Larentia too.

As Larentia stirred in her sleep, the brunette flicked her wrist and summoned the fallen blanket. “Rise.” The fabric slithered up and covered the four-year-old.
